I was having trouble with free and bought it and still I cant get it to work even when installing with the itch api :(
Have you tried the installer, this command?

you can install from the archive, and then add your key to the file
"$HOME/.config/itchiokey.txt"

I changed the api already so dont worry if its there in that by chance. :)
Can you make a tutorial for deploy on linux and your program use? i will pai for that!
